Auto Hail Repair Process
Document the damage and gather information.
- Where was the vehicle located?
- When did it storm?
- Take pictures to authenticate.
- Retrieve your Policy number.
Once you’ve collected the information and documented the damage, it’s time to get ahold of your insurer. Whether through an app, calling your agent or calling the insurance company (click this link for a list of insurance company 800 numbers) its time to file the claim. Inside the app, or on the phone they will gather the information they need and let you know what to do next.
You can also have your agent call and file the claim.
The repairing facility can also file your claim.

Typically, the insurance company will want to evaluate your vehicle through a source they “trust”. Sometimes they will allow you to gather a few estimates and submit them. Here are the options they may provide;
- They send an adjuster to write a hail damage estimate.
- They request you go to a DRP (Direct Repair Program) shop to write the estimate.
- They ask you to go to your shop of choice to write the estimate.
- They ask you to do a virtual estimate. (These always suck.)
- They ask you to go to a “cat team” estimating location.
Once you have moved through the estimating step, you can choose whoever you’d like to repair it. THEY CAN NOT TELL YOU WHERE TO REPAIR YOUR VEHICLE.
Often, they will attempt to funnel you into one of their preferred shops. They do this for many reasons. Here are a few ways they try to manipulate you into their shops.
- If you use anyone other than who they want, they make it sound like you will have to pay out of pocket. SIMPLY NOT TRUE. If the shop you choose has integrity and writes the claim properly, they will pay the shop.
- If you go to anyone else, they can not guarantee the work. THEY AREN’T the repairer. Only the repairer will handle workmanship issues.
Again, you are allowed, by law, to repair your vehicle where YOU CHOOSE.
If you have rental coverage, coordinate appropriately.

Drop the vehicle off at the shop of your choice (hopefully Horny Toad Hail) and that shop should handle the process from that point forward. The shop will handle:
- Any supplemental needs. (They will take pictures and request a supplement for any missed damage.)
- All parts ordering and installation.
- All paintwork and bodywork.
- Cleaning it for delivery.
- Once vehicle is finished, shop will call for pickup.
- Inspect it. Look it over thoroughly, ensure the parts that were needed were replace, and all of the agreed upon work is finished to your satisfaction.
